Liskeard Lights Up

Liskeard’s annual winter carnival is always a magical evening. There will be a procession of lanterns followed by the switching on of the Christmas lights and a firework display. This year the theme is ‘Carnival of the Animals’ so expect a veritable menagerie to be roaming the streets!

The children in Key Stage 2 at Trewidland Primary School worked with local artist Mark Gregory. He showed us how to create a lantern shaped like an animal’s head.

First you have to create the basic structure using withy (tough, flexible branch of an osier or other willow). Then you cover it with strong, white tissue paper and a lot of watery PVA glue.

Finally, the lanterns are decorated with colourful tissue paper; not too dark else the light inside won’t be seen.
